Co-Occurring Disorders

Very often mental illnesses will co-exist with other behavioral health problems such as substance abuse.  Birmingham Group Health Services, Inc. offers a Co-Occurring Disorders Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that is specifically designed to treat individuals affected by both mental illness and substance abuse and provides an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or partial hospitalization.

BGHS' Co-Occurring Disorders IOP is a cooperative effort of clinical, community support (case management), and rehabilitation services that provide a wide range of treatment options to ensure the greatest level of recovery success for each individual enrolled in the program.  The IOP uses an holistic or "whole person" approach to treatment that is tailored to each person's individual needs and includes a mentoring program which facilitates the active support of successful IOP graduates to assist clients in early recovery.

Co-Occurring Disorders IOP Program Components

  • Integrated treatment administered by             co-occurring disorder specialists.

  • Vocational, case management, and social rehabilitation services designed to address the total needs of recovering individuals.

  • A mentoring program involving the active support and participation of successful IOP graduates in assisting new IOP participants with achieving early recovery.

  • Seamless coordination of aftercare.
