Separation and divorce is a time for transition for children and
adults. It is filled with a variety of emotions and needs for those
experiencing it. During this time, families are becoming reorganized
and figuring out how to move forward with the needs of their
children in mind. They are looking for options to help them cope
with the changes of today, and prepare for the needs of tomorrow.
The Family Mediation Center (FMC) at Birmingham Group Health
Services, Inc. has a number of services to help families
during separation, divorce and in the times following the
dissolution of a marriage. Our goal is to help minimize the conflict
as parents focus on their children and the future.
Mediation Services
Services at the Family Mediation Center are designed to work with
adults and children focusing on the challenges and needs of the
reorganized family. Our Mediation Services are for adults interested
in working out the details of their divorce in an amicable manner.
Mediation allows clients to maintain control over their own lives.
Parties are given an opportunity to work together for the benefit of
their children, to make decisions and resolve issues that cloud
their individual and co-parenting abilities to focus on the
important task of parenting.
Co-Parenting Mediation Program
FMC's Co-Parenting Mediation Program is for parents involved in a
divorce action and for those who have already been divorced.
The program focuses on effective communication and the skills needed
to parent children in two separate homes. It is tailored to the
special needs of parents or intervening parties who have on-going
issues with their parenting plans. Parenting, discipline and
communication issues may be impacting their ability to care for
their children and to relate with one another as co-parents.
Collaborative Divorce
FMC also offers Collaborative Divorce Services, an interdisciplinary
approach to an amicable divorce. Collaborative Divorce focuses on
the emotional, legal and financial aspects of a separation. It
utilizes professionals in each field to provide the most effective
resolution of issues. We offer divorce coaching, and work closely
with the other disciplines to help the family through the divorce
experience. Counseling services are often needed when significant
changes occur. We offer individual, couples, and family therapy.
Staff at the Family Mediation
Center are eager to help in any way we can. For more information
about our services, please contact the Family Mediation Center at
