Birmingham Group Health Services, Inc. (BGHS) is the Valley's primary provider of mental health services and the lead agency of the Naugatuck Valley HIV CARE Collaborative, a group of HIV/AIDS service providers within the Valley, Greater Waterbury, and Meriden areas. The quality of care at BGHS is nationally recognized, and has been accredited by CARF for more than 18 years. Our customer-centered philosophy, exceptional staff, innovative programs, and comprehensive approach to treatment have made the Valley Mental Health Center a model for quality service and care.
The Valley Care Team, is a multi-disciplinary team of treatment providers (including case managers, mental health and substance abuse clinicians, medical care providers, and other support staff) who coordinate program services funded through the Ryan White CARE Act, the Department of Public Health, and other private organizations. These services are specifically designed for individuals (and their families) who are infected/affected with HIV/AIDS. Specially trained clinicians meet with individuals seeking Valley CARE Team services as often as necessary to address their identified needs. Therapy sessions can take place in the office or home, and can be conducted in an individual or group setting. The main goal of the clinician is to establish a trusting relationship with clients and provide the support and understanding individuals need to live independently with the HIV virus.

In 1990, Congress enacted Public Law 101-381, the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. The Ryan White CARE Act is intended to help communities and states increase the availability of services to people with HIV/AIDS. Ryan White Title I directs emergency funding to areas hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Valley CARE Team collaborative is funded in part by the Ryan White CARE Act. ___________________________________
Birmingham Group Health Services provides housing assistance and support to HIV/AIDS clients living in the Lower Naugatuck Valley area under the HOPWA program. The HOPWA program offers Emergency Housing Assistance (STRMU), Transitional Rental Assistance and other housing related services including advocacy, referrals, information and linkages with existing housing resources.
