Peer/Mutual Support Services

Birmingham Group Health Services, Inc.'s (BGHS) commitment to a recovery-oriented system of care and holistic approach to treatment have inspired the creation of a variety of peer/mutual support services led by consumers of BGHS.  The following are a list of peer support services currently offered at BGHS.

Peer Engagement Program:
BGHS' Peer Engagement Program employs persons in recovery who assist other individuals in overcoming barriers they may experience in accessing more traditional mental health services.

Warm-Line:
This peer-run service is available to individuals who are not in crisis yet could benefit from the assistance of peers in managing day to day frustrations and difficulties. For more information about the Warm-Line, click here.

Customer Service Representatives:

This innovative service provides assistance for individuals who are just beginning to seek supports at BGHS.  Upon intake, individuals are informed about the availability of this volunteer service which provides assistance from peers who have been hired and trained as customer services representatives to help individuals negotiate the BGHS system of treatment and care, fill out initial paper work, and accompany individuals during the waiting room portion of their first visit.

Peer Support Groups
Research suggests that peers helping peers are an important factor in recovery success.  Peer-led support groups facilitate supportive peer relationships and empower consumers to become active participants in their treatment plans.

The following peer-led support groups are currently being offered at BGHS:

Community Warmline:  A support program that provides a free telephone number for persons in recovery to call when they need support, a chat, or just a friendly and understanding ear to talk to.  (Click here for more information about The Warmline.)

Schizophrenics Anonymous (S.A.) - A self-help support group for persons recovering from Schizophrenia or a Schizophrenia related illness. (Click here for more information about S.A.)

Emotions Anonymous - A support group for persons wishing to make changes in the way he/she deals with emotions.

Art Group - A group that utilizes art to help reduce stress.

Advocacy Committee - A group that discusses and advocates for issues concerning persons in recovery.

Executive Committee - Members of The Valley Social Club who plan activities and events for the club. (Click here for more information about The Valley Social Club.)
