The Valley Social Club

Birmingham Group Health Services' Valley Social Club, located at 283 Main Street in Ansonia, Connecticut, is a member-run group that elects its own officers and offers a full schedule of social and recreational activities for its members.  The purpose of the club is to offer persons in recovery the opportunity to learn new skills or improve existing skills in all areas of community living, including interpersonal relationships.  The Club is open daily, and members are encouraged to "drop by" and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and informal activities that happen daily.

In addition to regularly scheduled activities, the Valley Social Club also offers members opportunities to participate in several committees and peer support programs such as...

The Executive Committee: The role of the Valley Social Club's Executive Committee is to provide and promote empowerment of Club members through the operation of a club-run governing board.  Members of the Executive Committee are responsible for setting standards and goals for their club and bringing important member concerns and issues to the forefront.  Members of the Valley Social Club's Executive Committee are nominated by their fellow members and must be elected to their positions.

Newsletter Committee: The Newsletter Committee is for those members who enjoy writing and submitting interesting articles for the Social Club Newsletter.  The committee accepts all submissions and assists with revisions, spelling, and resources for all contributors.

Inservice Committee: The Inservice Committee is designed to bring in speakers with various interests and topics for the purpose of education, enlightenment, and awareness of club members regarding their community and issues that affect those in recovery.  The committee also presents a monthly "Enlightened Lunch" that features guest speakers and a free lunchtime meal for all who attend.

Activities Committee: Members of the Activities Committee plan and arrange activities held at the club.  Members are responsible for all facets of the planned activity including duties such as decorating, cooking, clean-up, and shopping for the event.

Warmline:  The members of the Valley Social Club operate the Community Warmline, a consumer-run and managed telephone support service that is staffed by persons in recovery who are trained in peer support and communication skills.  The Warmline operators monitor phone lines in the evening, taking calls from within the community from people who are in need of support and a friendly voice.
