They're all over your house.  They're in your child's school.  In fact, you probably picked some up the last time you went to the grocery store...common household items that children are inhaling - to get "high!"

The inhaling, or "huffing/sniffing," of everyday products to get high is a silent epidemic.  One in five eighth graders has sniffed or huffed an inhalant at the risk of brain damage and even death.  Before eighth grade, more kids have used inhalants than marijuana and over one million youth experiment with inhalants every year.

Each year, untold numbers of kids die from inhalant abuse, but many parents and educators remain unaware of the "huffing" and "sniffing" going on right under their noses.

What Can Parents Do?   Signs of Inhalant Abuse...
  • Educate yourself about the dangers and signs of inhalant abuse.

  • Talk early and often to your children about this harmful behavior.

  • Remember when talking with your child that inhalants are not drugs; they are poisons and toxins and should be discussed as such.

  • Get involved and stay involved in your children's lives.

  • Red or runny eyes or nose.
  • Spots or sores around the mouth.
  • Chemical breath odor.
  • Drunk, dazed or dizzy appearance.
  • Nausea, loss of appetite.
  • Anxiety, excitability, irritability.
  • Paints or stains on body or clothing.
