Parent
Organizations have contributed so much to the success of their
particular schools and to their children’s education. VSAAC is aware of the
many directions the members of your association must follow to
accomplish all of your goals, but we are hoping that you will be
able to find time to support one further effort on behalf of the health
and well- being of our children.
Are you aware, substance use is the
number one health problem in our Nation. Our lives are affected in so
many ways by alcohol, tobacco and other drug use/abuse and the myriad
negative consequences resulting from that use/abuse. You are probably
also aware that parents are the most effective tool in preventing their
children from engaging in alcohol, tobacco and other illegal drug use
and the negative behaviors these children get caught-up in, resulting
from such use.
VSAAC is forming a Parent Resource
Advisory Board. We believe a parent involved in his/her child’s
school can provide a valuable service to the school’s parent
population. The parent would be a link to VSAAC with the purpose of
providing educational materials, guidance and referrals for parents. We
also believe that a parent within their child’s school will be more
successful in providing resources and information than someone from
outside the school community.
The VSAAC Parent Advisory Board is open
to any parent whose child/children attend a Valley private or public
school. The members of the Parent Advisory Board would
attend one informational/training session and one general meeting per
quarter. Contact with VSAAC would be through the Coalition Coordinator
on an as needed basis. Information would be provided by the Coalition
Coordinator through newsletters and phone calls. The Coalition
Coordinator would provide materials, programs and presentations to
parents and classes on topics such as inhalants, smoking, etc. as
requested by the Parent Resource Advisory Board member.
VSAAC’s goal is to form a direct link to
the parents of each individual school through the members of the Parent
Resource Advisory Board in order to further its mission “to reduce
alcohol, tobacco and other drug use in their service area among youth
and over time, among adults through community mobilization, public
awareness and advocacy.” As the title indicates, the PRAB will act
as advisors to VSAAC concerning school issues.
If you, or someone
you know, would be interested in joining the PRAB, please contact VSAAC
at (203) 736-8566 today!
