What is a “Drink”? |
|

It’s not how many drinks
you have, but how much alcohol that you
consume.
In charts and statistics, a drink is defined as:
lOne 12 ounce beer
lOne shot of 80 proof
liquor
lOne 5 ounce glass of
wine
Mixed Drinks – “Averages’ are based on drink recipes
using 80 proof liquors. The alcohol content varies depending on
the proof of the liquor, the use of more than one type of
liquor, and, if the alcohol was measured

VSAAC's
Turning 21
Birthday Project
Celebrate Responsibly
|
The Project:
Turning twenty-one is a major milestone for young people
entering adulthood. The VSAAC Turning 21 Birthday Project is
designed to educate young adults and their parents about the
responsible use of alcohol, the effects of alcohol, and the
consequences of alcohol poisoning. Through the Turning
21 Birthday, VSAAC hopes to reduce the incidence of drinking
and driving, as well as other ill effects of misuse of
alcohol by young adults, in the Valley community.
How it works:
Parents or loved ones of a young adult celebrating his/her
21st birthday can send a special pre-printed
birthday
day card created by the Turning 21 Birthday Project that
both expresses a loving sentiment and advocates responsible
birthday celebrations. The card will also include
an aside explaining responsible use, effects of alcohol on
the body, and/or how to determine when medical attention is
necessary.
Click here to see sample of card.
How can I
participate?:
The Turning 21 Birthday Card
is provided free of charge by VSAAC. Parents/loved ones who wish to send a
Turning
21 Birthday Card,
can e-mail VSAAC at:
turning21@bghealth.org
with their contact information. VSAAC will mail a
Turning 21 Birthday Card, free of charge, to the parent
(anywhere in the continental United States). Once the
card has been received, the parent/loved one need only sign
it and pass it on to the birthday boy/girl.

Passing
Out Doesn't Mean Sleeping It Off!..... |

Warning Signs & Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning:
lUnconscious or
semi-conscious
lSlow respirations of
eight or less per minute, or, lapses between breaths of more
than eight seconds.
lCold, clammy, or
pale bluish skin. In the event of alcohol poisoning, these
signs may be accompanied by a strong odor of alcohol.
Appropriate Action
lIf you encounter
a person who exhibits one or more of the signs or symptoms,
CALL 911.
lWhile waiting for
emergency assistance to arrive, gently turn the intoxicated
person to their side and support this position with a pillow
or rolled piece of clothing under their back. This will
prevent choking if the person begins to vomit. Stay with
the person until emergency personnel arrive.
lIf a person
appears to be “sleeping it off”, or, semi-conscious, it is
important to realize the alcohol already in the stomach will
continue to enter the bloodstream.
